Frequently Asked Questions About Radiant Heat

ontractors - These questions are often asked by your remodeling or new construction clients:

Is radiant heat expensive? How much does it cost?

None of our clients has ever complained of the cost once they've experienced it. They see it as having value. We have a range of products which fit small projects and small budgets as well as large projects with related budgets. Again, the cost of operation is balanced by the client's perception of value. Today, California's new or remodeled bathrooms with lighting will use as much power as a warmed floor.

How long is the warranty?

Each product carries its own warranty against manufacturing defects for periods of ten up to 25 years.

What can go wrong?

It is rare that a product is defective. Most problems are due to improper installation or inattention to manufacturers‚ installation instructions. All manufacturers work diligently to avoid mistakes in the field by providing explicit installation instructions, including printed material and, for some products, videos. They constantly work to improve instructions and techniques.

Who takes care of it if something goes wrong?

The first step is to call Summitteers Radiant Heat, Inc. The solution is usually something that can be provided by telephone or fax. We will ask a series of questions to help determine where the problem lies.

Who pays if I have to take up my floor?

This is the last resort and a very rare occurance if the manufacturer's instructions have been followed implicitly. We try to avoid this situation by providing complete information.

These are questions we often hear from contractors:

How do I know which product to use?

Sometimes your client has experienced a product in a friend's home. Some clients choose a product from searching the Internet. You may have a preference, i.e., electrical contractors prefer working with cables.

Who installs the floorwarming system?

Installation is usually a joint effort between the general, the electrical and tile contractor.

How do I know what size to order?

There are two common ways. You choose the sizes from a manufacturer's literature or you can fax us a copy of your plan, and we will help you decide.

What electrical supply do I need?

In general, floorwarming products require at least one 120 volt, 20 amp, ground fault protected, dedicated circuit. Heating systems usually operate at 240 volts. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions and local and national codes. Controls are line voltage (120 volts for floors). We suggest mounting a 4" junction box and single mud ring where the floorwarming system will be connected to the control. (Refer to manufacturers‚ instructions.)

The subfloor need not be lowered, as low-profile systems do not require thermal mass such as a mortar bed.

What are the secrets of a successful installation?

Measure correctly, check dimensions and check size of materials to b supplied. Read the instructions! Ask if a video version is available for the produc you are buying. Test system before, during and after installation. (This is done by taking an ohm reading using an electric meter.) Be careful not to damage the material before, during or after installation. Damage may occur if materials are exposed to heavy weight or sharp edges.

Which products do you carry?

Summitteers Radiant Heat, Inc. does not carry every system made. A list of ones we do carry can be found here. There are many systems available and more enter the marketplace regularly. We cannot know everything about every product. Instead we have focused on products with which we have experience and are backed by manufacturers who share our commitment to quality. We have confidence in the products we sell because of our experience with the manufacturers‚ support.
