ummitteers Radiant Heat began as a part of Summitteers Construction, a general contracting firm. The Construction Company was building multi-family units in Oakland which included electric radiant ceiling heat. The product manufacturer wanted someone to sell their products for similar projects. Marilyn Thurau accepted the challenge and worked originally as part of the Construction Company. The radiant heating unit was incorporated in 1985 and has operated continuously every since.

Marilyn says, "In 1985 I was tired of being a volunteer, my husband's job kept him overseas for long periods of time, and our children were on their own. I happened to be present during a discussion between a contractor and supplier who was looking for a dealer for the company's products in the Bay Area. So with $2,000 I set up a corporation (most of the work was in condos and townhomes at that time) and went into business.

"We still handle a variation of that first product, a thin film element now known as Calorique. Flexwatt, as it was then known, adapted the basic product for installation under joisted floors. Shortly after, Maxxon (the Gypcrete People) put an electric cable on the market to complement their hydronic line. EasyHeat followed with Warm Tiles. And since then several permutations have appeared. They all have one thing in common--comfortably warm floors.

"Summitteers Radiant Heat has since grown. We receive calls from throughout the United States from people who have heard we know the radiant heating business. We've supplied contractors in many states.

"We were closely allied with a construction company at the beginning, and have kept our focus on contractors and designers rather than the end consumer. We like to think we see things from the contractor's standpoint regarding value, installation, product liability, and schedules.

"We want to make it easy for contractors to choose and install our products. Toward that end, we gladly supply information on the products themselves, installation, trouble-shooting, and answering owner's questions. We feel an informed consumer can make a better choice because he or she understands the product and what it can do."

In order to keep close to the construction industry, Summitteers holds membership in NARI (The National Association of the Remodeling Industry), BIANC (Building Industry Association, Northern California) and the National Association of Home Builders, and the Radiant Panel Association. Marilyn Thurau holds certification as Certified Remodeler Associate (NARI) and Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR). The company has won a number of awards.
